Good democracy cannot survive without respecting and protecting human rights, says NHRC Chairperson, Shri Justice A.K. Mishra

Shri Justice A. K. Mishra, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India today said that good democracy cannot survive without respecting and protecting human rights. He was inaugurating the Commission’s flagship 15 days online short-term internship programme. He said that the concept of human rights does not lay so much in legalese as much as it is embedded in our social behaviour and practices, having a spiritual tenor and tone.

Justice Mishra said that India has a long tradition of respect for whole of the universe, including all living beings as in the ecology and not just human beings. Therefore, it is necessary that we strive for inculcating those values, which promote and protect human rights, and do not violate them. He expressed the hope that the student interns will make the best use of the knowledge imparted by various experts during the internship program on different aspects of human rights.

Hundred and ten student interns from across the country are participating in the online short-term internship.

Senior NHRC officers including Mr. Bimbadhar Pradhan, Secretary General, Mr. Santosh Mehra, DG (I) and Mrs. Anita Sinha, Joint Secretary (P&T) attended the inaugural session.
